A Hidden San Diego Gem

Goat Hill Park Golf Course - Oceanside, CA

San Diego is famous for its iconic golf courses, from Torrey Pines to Aviara, but if you’re seeking an affordable, hidden gem that captures the true SoCal golf spirit, look no further than Goat Hill Park Golf Course in Oceanside(https://goathillpark.com/). Originally built in 1952 as Center City Golf Course, a 9-hole par 36 layout, it quickly became a San Diego County staple. Designer Ludwig Keehn transformed it in the early 90s into the 18-hole short course locals lovingly call “Goat Hill.” With stunning ocean views, fresh breezes, and a raw golf vibe, this course offers a unique and challenging experience that’s hard to find elsewhere.

The course plays as a par 65 but provides plenty of opportunities to use all your clubs—including a driver off the tee on several holes. I’d definitely recommend riding in a cart, as the course’s hilly terrain can be a workout on foot. Goat Hill has an intriguing, celebrity-touched history that adds to its charm, which you can read about here. With greens that typically roll true, a laid-back SoCal atmosphere, and fees ranging from $15 to $80 depending on day and time, it’s one of the best values around. You’ll find a fantastic craft beer selection, and you’re just as likely to see players with dogs as fellow golfers on this course. Personally, I had one of my best rounds here, shooting a 79 on a last-minute Sunday tee time—a score I’ll always remember.

The driving range is another highlight, where you can tune your swing to the sound of rock music. Though it’s not Torrey Pines, Goat Hill Park offers affordable, high-quality golf and the perfect place to enjoy a warm-up round. Plus, they’ve got some of the coolest logo gear you’ll find at any golf course—perfect for bringing a piece of this laid-back course home with you.
